Today marks another year without her.
A lot has happened in these 2 years without Cassidy Jane and we’ve been in limbo where it felt like nothing really significant was happening with the case against Jonathan L. Davis.
Delay after delay, so he could waive his right to a speedy trial, spend 2+ years in the Clay County Jail, and have those 717+ days subtracted from his final sentence.
Every month for the last two years, Cassidy's mom (sometimes with her brother or dad) has driven from Tallahassee to Green Cove Springs to sit in the courtroom for the 5 minutes it takes for Judge Lester to call the case, for the handcuffed Davis to be brought in, for the two lawyers to say 50 words to the judge, for the judge to flip through his calendar and set the next date for the next hearing. Rinse and repeat for TWO YEARS.
But the delays have come to an end.
On Monday, March 27, 2023, Jonathan L. Davis pleaded GUILTY to Hit and Run - Fail to stop and remain at a crash involving death.
Except we hit another delay. Because of course, we did.
We went to court today, (on the second anniversary of Cassidy's death), expecting the judge to set a date for the sentencing hearing. Instead, we sat through a couple of hours to find out that nothing was going to happen in our case and we'd have to come back again in two weeks. So, we'll do it all over again on April 24 and update you when we have that sentencing date.
The Sentencing Hearing is when we really need YOU.
We will want to fill the courtroom with people who loved Cassidy, people who worked with her, and people who want to see justice served. The more people there, the more Judge Lester will understand the real impact Jonathan L Davis's actions on 4/10/21 had on our lives and just how great the loss of Cassidy has been for all of us.
Not everyone will be able to speak to the court but there will be some victim impact statements given. If you have something you'd like the judge to know about your life without Cassidy or why you believe Jonathan L. Davis should not be given a lenient sentence, let us know and we'll do what we can to get your message to Judge Lester. Message me here or email dtanton@gmail.com, reach out to Chris on Facebook, or to @JusticeForCassidy on Instagram.
We'll update everyone again with the sentencing date, just as soon as we have it. In the meantime, thank you all for your support over the last two years. It's been difficult but your support has meant the world to us all.
